It can be very easy to fill your dishwasher with soap. We have bad news: It is possible that you are using too much soap. It is possible that you are not using enough soap. However, this is less likely because modern dishwashers have a higher water efficiency than older models.

Too much dishwasher detergent can cause residue to build up and block your drain, which in turn allows mildew growth. You can also get dishes stained and cloudy from too much dishwasher detergent. These simple guidelines will help you save money and increase dishwasher performance.

How much soap should you use in your dishwasher?

When determining how much soap you should use in your dishwasher, the first thing you need to do is determine the hardness/softness level of the water supply. If you don’t know, there are DIY kits that you can use to check this. You can also ask your local water authority.

It is a rule of thumb that the more soap you use, the softer the water.
After you have determined the water type, you can read the instructions of your soap manufacturer to determine how much you should use.

Start with 25% less water than what the instructions recommend. For hard water, you will need 25% more. Great! You can always try again to find the best results.
