If you do it right, you can.
Check the care tag before you start to ensure that your backpack can be washed. Leather and suede require special care. If you have a tag but are certain the fabric can be washed, the rest is easy!
Put a school backpack in the washing machine
These are the steps to washing a backpack in a washing machine.
Step 1 – Empty your Backpack
Don’t put your school backpack in the washing machine without carefully checking every pocket. You can find coins, pens and hairpins in small spaces between seams and pockets. These items can become lodged in your washing machine, which can cause problems later.
You can empty the backpack completely, and then place any items you find in a basket for later sorting.
Step 2 – Disconnect removable pieces
If the backpack has removable parts, can you washing machine? Yep! You can remove all detachable parts such as frame stays, straps, and accessories.
These items may need to be washed. Suitcase straps, for example, require special care while standard nylon straps can be washing machine.
Step 3 – Pre-Treat Stains & Soak
Examine the backpack and any detached parts. Use detergent and a toothbrush that has been dipped into water to clean any stains. You can also look inside your backpack for any stuck-on residue, and give them a thorough scrub.
Step 4 – Place all washable items in mesh laundry bags
Mesh laundry bags can be used for many purposes and protect fabrics throughout the wash cycle. Laundry bags also protect the washing machine from damage caused by zippers, buckles and other embellishments. The bag can be used to protect your top-load washing machine backpack from getting caught in the agitator. The backpack should be placed in a large mesh laundry bag. Other washable items can be placed in a separate laundry bag. You can wash the bags together.
Step 5: Adjust the Wash Cycle Settings
The care tag instructions for your backpack will direct you to set the wash cycle settings. If there is no care tag, use warm water and a gentle cycle. To ensure that all detergent residue and grime are removed, you can use the extra rinse option.
Step 6 – Wash & Disinfect Your Backpack
A backpack might only need to be cleaned once in a while. If the backpack was used to transport shoes, sweaty clothes or food, it may have bacteria, germs and/or fungal infections that could spread to other items. You should wash the school backpack with soapy water.
To disinfect a backpack, you can add a pine oil disinfectant to the water. Lysol Pine Action and PineSol are two brands that have a minimum amount of 80% of pine oil. For the right amount of pine oil to be added to your backpack when washing it, please refer to the product label.
Step 7 – Airdry
Don’t dry a backpack in the dryer. Clean a school backpack by putting it in the washing machine. Then, use a towel to wipe out the pockets, seams, and crevices. Next, open the bag and let it dry completely.
Add your detergent and laundry bags to the washing machine. You will need to run the full wash cycle and rinse it.
